Rent is just way too high for most businesses to be able to make a good go of it. Because prices went so crazy over the last few years the owners have to charge reasonable rent though to get any sort of rental return on their invesment.
Summer needs to be promoted a lot more so that businesses can make a go of it year round not just in winter.
Funny how most of us despise fast food, but many of us still secretly crave it. I usually allow myself one meal a month at someplace I would "ordinarily" never eat... like McD's, KFC, Mos Burger, etc. At least we have the option here in Hakodate, I guess.
I agree with Go Native that year-round rents are a bit too oppressive for most entrepreneurs to make a go of it. Things'll balance out though I think. Good food options should pop up on the fringes, right?
I always thought if there was going to be a fast food place to pop up in town it would be on route 5 in Kutchan. Considering the through traffic there it still surprises me that there isn't one. It'd be the only one between Hakodate and Sapporo, wouldn't it? Same thing with a drive-thru Starbucks.
