I am all for having a good time and not a stickler for the law however this winter in Niseko has definitely changed my perception on under age drinking. We could save ourselves from these idiots if there was a bit of solidarity among the bar owners and the combinis and the drinking age was strictly enforced. What da ya think? How else can we deal with these little new age bogans? http://thingsboganslike.wordpress.com/ Give me the good old mulleted bogan anyday!

I, too, am strongly opposed to underage boys drinking. Instead of being the constant nuisance that they are, I think they should be off unsupervised, huffing paint thinner, and breaking into our properties and stealing our gear while we adult men get legally inebriated.

Underage women on the other hand, I have lots of foo-foo drinks in my repertoire, let's party.

There have been a lot of 13 year old looking kids coming to the bar this year. We have been asking them for ID when they order (we have non alcohol drinks as well, so we give them the chance to order those). Usually they just tell us they have forgotten their ID at home...

Its really easy for foreigners to tell if the kids are underage, but when we ask our staff (Japanaese) if they thought they were too young to be drinking, they genuinely didnt think they were.

Might be worth letting the Japanese staff know that asking for ID is really routine overseas (or at least it is where I am from) and that it isnt offensive/rude.

Best of luck!

I've been ID'd hundreds (thousands?) of times... when you get past 30 all of a sudden it changes from being a pain in the arse to being a sort of compliment!

The reality is that the drinking age here is 20, and that's two years older than where lots of these offenders are from. The cops are loathe to police this because once they start, they have to keep going, and pretty soon every 18 + 19 year old in the country would be locked up. I have seen six year olds buying beer in a konbeni , and as long as they said it was for grandpa then it was all okay! And stuck right on the register was a "No alcohol to minors" sticker...

Hell, ID everyone. Good staff can make a joke of it and no one will get offended. But it has to be well publicised, and fully unified to work.

not going to happen

it is well documented that the Japanese police are corrupt and inept. add lazy to the list, which I think is the real problem here in hirafu. The only time people EVER get arrested in kutchan is when the Feds show up to bust the smokers.

truth be told, as a former underage drinker, i prefer the status-quo to the smell of bacon and a quasi police state.
